About Crasna

Architectural charasteristics

The traditional popular architecture manifests itself in the specific vine cellars and the houses with porch of the farmers.

Many houses were built and arranged according to a well-defined pattern. The house was built in a street front position and it had three parts: the main part of the house, the yard and the little house. As an extension of the house there was an open hovel with garners, baking furnace, then the barn for the cows and horses and then the granary separated the yard from the garden. Across it there was the traditional well and the drinking-trough made out of tree trunk.

The houses of Crasna and the traditional life style of the people can be seen in the Village-museum, opened in 2007.

Monuments

The streets of the settlement were made in radial structure and they end up at the Lutheran church, built in the 14th century in gothic style, renovated and extended in 1909. The main ornament of the church is its coffer ceiling, painted by Pataki Asztalos Janos in 1736, with legendary and biblical images and renaissance flower bouquets.

In the garden of the church there is a war memorial with the names of the fallen soldiers of the World War I and II. The memorial was inaugurated on the 8th of September, 1996, and its marble tables contain 94 fallen soldier names from the World War I and 44 from the World War II. On the 2nd of October, 1999.

Another memorial was inaugurated for the 150th anniversary of the war of independence from 1848-1849. We lay a wreath annually on the 15th of March to the graven column of Pakai Ferenc.

We inaugurated an alarm pole on the 7th of October 2000, in the yard of the Town Hall.

On the 5th of September, 2004, on the occasion of the 7th edition of Crasna’s Days, we inaugurated a Petofi Sandor bust, in the park in front of the Community Center. Lorincz Lehel’s work stands on a marble base. On this occasion the Community Center and the library were named after Petofi Sandor.

In remembrance of Cserey Farkas (junior) (1773-1842), famous botanist and scientist, the “Pro Crasna” foundation set up a memorial table at the entrance of the Catholic church.
